July 29, 2012

One of our favorite things to do in the summer at our Minnesota family resort is to sit on our porch and watch the hummingbirds.  We have several feeders just off the porch and for reasons we don’t understand, we have more hummingbirds at the lodge than any of the cabins on the resort.  And July and August seem to be the peak time.  We were really lucky this year (7/29/2012) in that we have seen several newly fledged baby hummingbirds.  They are little puffballs . . . actually looking bigger (actually – fatter) than the adults.  One of these little ones, we think it was his first time at the feeder.  He didn’t quite know what to do.  We watched the mama and daddy hummer buzz near him several times, keeping the other hummers away from him.  And at one point, the mama bird gently hovered over him and seemed to push his head toward the yellow flower.  It was an amazing sight.

The loons are also a favorite for our Minnesota family resort guests and for us to watch and listen to.  If you’ve never heard a loon, you’re in for a treat.  They have a variety of calls – some very soothing, and some are warning calls generally heard when an eagle is nearby.  And speaking of eagles, there’s an eagle nest on “Island One” not far from the resort that has been there for at least 10 years.  Each year there are two, and sometimes three, eaglets.  And what a racket they can make when their hungry and not yet flying!  The parent eagles are always looking for a meal for them.  If a fisherman throws over a fish that isn’t going to survive, you can bet one of the eagles will be there in an instant!

We hope you’ll visit our northern Minnesota family resort and enjoy the peaceful tranquility that comes with watching the birds.  It’s a Minnesota vacation experience that is sure to please everyone in your family!
