Fall in Northern Minnesota has a way of making you slow down. The air turns crisp, the mosquitoes disappear, and the forests surrounding Loon Point Resort begin changing from deep summer green to brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red.
You may already know the road to Loon Point by heart—but have you explored the beautiful fall drives nearby? Pack a thermos of coffee, grab your camera, and set out for two scenic routes filled with colorful forests, quiet lakes, winding roads, and plenty of reasons to pull over and enjoy the view.

Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway
Your fall color experience begins right at Loon Point Resort, where 53 wooded acres surround the cabins with brilliant maples, golden aspens, birch, and evergreens. When you are ready to explore farther, the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway is an easy 35-minute drive away—and the peaceful route there continues through beautiful Northwoods scenery.
Highway 38 winds through the Chippewa National Forest past quiet lakes, wetlands, and colorful hillsides. Keep watch for deer, bald eagles, waterfowl, and other Northwoods wildlife along the way. It is an easy and memorable fall outing that begins and ends with the beauty of Loon Point Resort.

The Avenue of Pines Scenic Byway follows Highway 46 between Deer River and Northome. This peaceful route is known for its tall red and white pines, golden aspens, birch trees, wetlands, and beautiful lake views.
The contrast between the green pines and bright fall foliage creates classic Northern Minnesota scenery. Pack a picnic, explore a quiet side road, or stop near Cut Foot Sioux Lake or Lake Winnibigoshish to enjoy the view. It is an easy drive to turn into a relaxing fall afternoon.

End the Day Back at Loon Point
After taking in the fall colors along the scenic byways, the drive back to Loon Point Resort gives you one more chance to enjoy the quiet beauty of the Northwoods. As evening settles in, gather around the warmth of a campfire, wrap up in a cozy blanket, and simply enjoy the stillness around you.
Far from city lights, the Northern Minnesota sky becomes especially dark and clear, revealing more stars than many guests say they ever see at home—and, on the right night, perhaps even get a glimpse of breath-taking northern lights. There is something about the quiet here that brings you closer to nature and gives you time to reconnect with the people you care about the most.
See you at the lake,
John & Sherrie
